What you’ll experience

Set aside your camera or phone and instead make one of a kind photograms of local plants and beach finds using the cyanotype process and sunlight.  Cyanotype or “blueprints” is a old cameraless photography technique used historically by botanists, and architects until its recent revival in the hands of fine art photographers and artists.

2 hr Session:  First we will take a short walk together dockside to Parkers’ Cove Harbour to gather plants and ephemera washed up on the beach.  Back in the studio, you will learn about the cyanotype process and how to go about making your photograms.  Bonnie will help you arrange your bounty into a pleasing design. When ready, we will go back outside and expose your designs on prepared paper to the sun.  After just enough exposure, you will wash your print in running water to bring out the white shadow pictures on a deep blue background, typical of cyanotype images.  By end of our session, you will have up to four 5″x7” cyanotype prints ready for framing to take with you as a memory of your adventure.

4 hr Session:  After going through the basic process of creating photograms described in the 2 hr session, Bonnie will teach you some additional tricks taking your photograms to the next level. You will try bleaching, toning and hand colouring  your prints with coffee, tea, and other organic materials for a wider range of colours and effects.

What’s included

Bonnie will provide coated paper or fabric* and all the supplies necessary for creating a finished cyanotype print. You bring your curiosity and sense of adventure.

*Quilters may be interested in using fabric instead of paper as long as  48 hour notice is given.

Things to Note
  • Cyanotype process relies on UV light, so on sunny days and we will be spending a good deal of time outdoors.  Bring a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes that can get wet.
  • In event of rain, we will work indoors using an UV lightbox and items from Bonnies collection.
  • The cyanotype process is simple but does involves some physical contact with darkroom chemicals which can stain clothing. You will be provided with neoprene gloves and old shirts to cover clothing.
  • Bonnie can adapt sessions to your interest, abilities, and age.  However, children under 13 yrs must be accompanied by adults.  Unfortunately, the studio is not wheelchair accessible.
